The Origin of Debt Review
Debt review, also known as debt counselling, was introduced in 2007 under the National Credit Act to address the growing debt crisis and provide a solution for over-indebted individuals.
The goal was to protect consumers from aggressive creditor actions, such as asset repossession, while offering a structured way to repay their debt.
Before debt review was introduced, many South Africans had no legal framework to protect their assets or seek relief from unmanageable debt.
